"A day in the life"

The requirement

A blue chip multinational bank with a graduate programme for 80 delegates needed their graduates to experience the way in which its core business functions worked together and to assess the suitability of delegates for certain roles. Coming at the end of a 4 week program it was imperative that the assessment was more than a just a multiple-choice, end-of-course test, but was seen as an enjoyable and productive learning experience in its own right.

Our solution

Based around our Advanced Trading Platform, this whole day simulation brought together sales, research and trading skills, stressing the inter-dependence of these key roles. Delegates were divided into eight teams, each representing a bank. After a morning meeting to brief the teams, research analysts prepared a report on the markets based on product research group documents from the previous quarter, which the client provided for added authenticity.

A large institutional client (played by 7city tutors) simultaneously put to tender a requirement for discretionary and advisory services. Using this, sales teams prepared a pitch proposing hedging solutions, buy/sell/hold recommendations, currency allocations and so on.

Meanwhile, traders used the platform to trade in an OTC market, based on a tailor-made scenario which enacted the months forecast by the printed collateral. The traders managed proprietary positions and made markets, dealing with incoming buyside orders and balancing their books by trading against each other and in the electronic broker market.

To ensure that participants gained experience across all roles, the above procedure was repeated for Equity, Derivatives and FX markets, with desk rotations between each stage.

Outputs (effectiveness of sales pitch, quality of analyst reports, and a rich array of trading platform metrics captured by the system) were compiled into an overall report which the client used to allocate delegates into their future roles in the business following the completion of the graduate program.
